In The NHS, It Pays To DIsclose LGB+ Status

A new pay gap study using the the National Health Service in England has good news for the LGB +; they are paid more.

NHS is government-controlled so there are not wide variations but they clearly pay more to people who disclose their sexual identity, while not having disclosed identity is specifically associated with a pay penalty.

NHS employees are paid in twelve 'bands' (or sub-bands) set by the government but the NHS Pay Review Board and cultural groups have input. The authors used the mid-point of the employee’s salary band (79 per cent women), adjusting for paid overtime hours, coupled with gender of choice from survey respondents. LGB+ employees who responded that they are open about their sexual orientation in their current job were counted as disclosed. Men were paid more than women while LGB+ were paid more than heterosexuals, on average.

LGB+ respondents tend to be younger than equivalent gender heterosexuals in their band, white, single, and better educated. The pay premiums associated with LGB+ status included factoring in marital status because married people have been found to be paid higher and that was the case here.

A significant pay gap between LGB+ employees and comparable heterosexuals does not exist, not in aggregate or for men and women separately, but LGB+ workers who have disclosed their sexual identity get paid more relative to comparable heterosexuals, and those who have not disclosed earn less. This is also true in aggregate, and for men and women separately.
